Dear Friend of El Centro Hispano

We at El Centro Hispano hope--you had-a-wonderful, relaxing summer and that this fall season finds you pursuing your professional and personal activities with renewed 'energy and satisfaction.

This is El Centro Hispano's 33rd. year of providing vitally needed services and information to the Hispanic community of White Plains and Westchester County. Last year we served more than 16,000 clients, 2000 more than the previous year. We are proud to report that the organization has been operating very successfully notwithstanding the ever-increasing demands on us as our population and its needs continue to grow.

It is with this continued increase in needs in mind that we once again ask for your help in supporting the work of El Centro Hispano.

The mission of El Centro Hispano is to strengthen Hispanic families by providing them with information and referral on issues related to housing, employment and immigration. El Centro Hispano also provides families with outreach, counseling, education, and advocacy programs to help achieve self-sufficiency. A great variety of bilingual and cross-cultural workshops are held on an ongoing basis to help the community assimilate the English language and the American culture while maintaining and enriching their own.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of El Centro Hispano  • More than 56 adults have graduated from our Computer Literacy for Adults Program sponsored in conjunction with the City of White Plains and Mercy College.

 • The Girl Scouts Bilingual Troop has more than 105 members actively participating in El Centro Hispano's cultural and civic activities.

 • The Culture through Technology Program has trained 46 adolescents in the latest computer programs and in stock market portfolio preparation.

 • The Pace/Centro Hispano Tutorial Outreach Program, sponsored by Pace, The White Plains School System and El Centro Hispano, has been extremely successful. More than 100 students receive assistance with their academic course work every year.

 • The English classes for Adults sponsored by Rochambeau School at Centro Hispano have been full to capacity during both the school year and the summer sessions.

 • More than 200 Hispanic parents have benefited from our workshops dealing with parenting skills.

 • In 2005, El Centro was able to provide 6,490 job referrals in White Plains and nearby areas, as well as 4,829 rental referrals for apartments and studios in Westchester County.

 • The Training Program for High School Students has become one of our most popular programs. Participants work at El Centro Hispano and provide us with invaluable assistance with our office daily routine and/or with our special activities while earning community service hours by practicing their Spanish and becoming familiar with the problems and needs of the community in which they live. More than 100 youngsters have benefited from this program, and upon graduation several of them received special recognition for their contributions to the Hispanic community.

 • Our new Boy Scouts troop has been a great success. Although the troop was established only a year ago, we already have 29 children actively participating.

In addition, thanks to the funding received from the Pace Women's Justice Center we are now providing services to women who are victims of domestic violence. They have free access to attorneys who specialize in family law and who help them with custody and child support issues, immigration questions and any other problems related to their case. We have had several community meetings related to this topic with an attendance of more than 200. Afterwards, as a follow up, clients are seen on an individual basis.

In order to continue to provide these much needed services, and in order to close the gap created by the loss of a $10,000 annual funding source, we are asking for your help. In preparation for a busy fall season and 2007, we are reaching out to our supporters and ask that you support our community and your neighbors by sending a tax-deductible contribution to El Centro Hispano in the enclosed envelope. Your contribution will help ensure that the work of El Centro Hispano will continue for the benefit of those members of the Hispanic community most in need.

Wishing you the best today and always, we thank you in advance for your generosity,

Robin Bikkal, President
